Bernardo Bellotto (1722–1780) is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished view painters of the 18th century in Europe. His most famous works are large-scale depictions of northern European cities, characterized by panoramic compositions, a stark contrast between light and shadow, and a meticulous attention to architectural details.

This book offers a comprehensive account of Bellotto's life and career, as well as a documentation of the historic reuniting of his five spectacular views of the fortress of Königstein, which were displayed together for the first time in over 250 years after the National Gallery acquired them from the North in 2017. Commissioned by August III, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, these works portraying the fortress from various angles are undoubtedly Bellotto's finest non-urban paintings. These remarkable pictures are imbued with a monumentality rarely seen at this time, and the series dramatically illustrates the very different direction in which Bellotto took the tradition of European view painting.

Published by the National Gallery Company/Distributed by Yale University Press, the exhibition schedule for this remarkable collection includes a display at the National Gallery in London from July 22 to October 31, 2021, followed by an exhibition at the Manchester Art Gallery from November 20, 2021, to February 27, 2022.
