In 1969, Bernice Sandler was nearing the completion of her doctorate in Education at the University of Maryland, simultaneously teaching part-time and actively pursuing a full-time position. Despite her exceptional credentials, it became evident that she was not being seriously considered for the job. Sandler pondered the underlying reasons behind this rejection. A male colleague, in a moment of candidness, remarked, "Let's face it, you come on too strong for a woman." These words struck a deep chord with Sandler, as they brought the issue of sex discrimination to the forefront of her own workplace. It was no longer possible for her to remain ambivalent about women's rights. She could no longer dismiss feminists as being "man-hating," "abrasive," or "unfeminine" based on media portrayals. However, she faced a dilemma: what could she actually do to address this injustice? Sandler soon realized that the existing laws prohibiting discrimination did not explicitly cover sex discrimination in education. Determined to make a change, she embarked on a journey that would ultimately lead to the passage of Title IX. This groundbreaking legislation made it illegal for any federally funded institution to discriminate against individuals based on their sex, including in the realm of education. The impact of Title IX was profound, extending its reach to women in the workplace, in schools, and in sports. Bernice Sandler's unwavering dedication and tireless efforts played a pivotal role in shaping this significant legislation. Her story serves as a powerful reminder that it is not only individuals in positions of power who can bring about change. Rather, it is the determination and resilience of ordinary people who can effectuate significant transformations. Moreover, this book includes an extensive backmatter titled "How to Be an Activist," authored by Know Your IX, a survivor- and youth-led project of Advocates for Youth. The project aims to empower students to end sexual and dating violence in their schools, fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all. As we reflect on the progress made in the fight for gender equality, Bernice Sandler's story serves as a shining example of how one individual can make a lasting impact. Her determination and resilience in the face of adversity inspire us to continue striving for a world where discrimination is eradicated and every person is treated with dignity and respect.
