  • More about Between Banat: Queer Arab Critique and Transnational Arab Archives

Queer Arab critique looks at homoeroticism and nonnormative sexualities between Arab women in transnational Arab literature, art, and film. It uses the term "banat" to refer to women, femmes, and nonbinary people who disrupt stereotypical and Orientalist representations of the "Arab woman." By attending to Arab womens narration of desire and identity, queer Arab critique substantiates queer Arab histories while challenging Orientalist and Arab national paradigms that erase queer subjects.

Between Banat and Mejdulene, Bernard Shomali delves into the exploration of homoeroticism and nonnormative sexualities among Arab women in transnational Arab literature, art, and film. Spanning from the enchanting tales of The Thousand and One Nights and the Golden Era of Egyptian cinema to contemporary novels, autobiographical writings, prints, and graphic novels that envision queer Arab futures, Shomali employs what she refers to as queer Arab critique to locate queer desire amidst heteronormative imperatives. Through her analysis, she unveils how systems of heteropatriarchy and Arab nationalisms limit the possibilities for queer Arab women, drawing upon the transliterated term "banat" (the Arabic word for girls) to encompass women, femmes, and nonbinary individuals who challenge stereotypical and Orientalist representations of the "Arab woman." By foregrounding Arab womens narration of desire and identity, queer Arab critique substantiates queer Arab histories while challenging Orientalist and Arab national paradigms that erase queer subjects. In doing so, Shomali posits queerness and Arabness as relational and transnational subject formations, advocating for a prioritization of transnational collectivity over the politics of authenticity, respectability, and inclusion as a means to foster queer freedom.
