The War of the Pacific (1879-1883) holds a significant place in the history of Peru and Chile, challenging the traditional narrative of conflict. In his book, Beyond Patriotic Phobias, historian Joshua Savala delves into the overlooked cooperative relationships between Peruvians and Chileans, despite the backdrop of war. Through meticulous archival research, Savala uncovers the interconnectedness of workers across borders, including maritime port workers, doctors, and police. These groups, in both countries, were deeply intertwined through various forms of labor, such as ship and port operations, disease transmission management during a cholera outbreak, and surveillance of port and maritime activities to address perceived threats like transnational crime and labor organizing. By tracing the movement of people, diseases, and ideas, Savala reconstructs the circulation that shaped a South American Pacific world. The resulting narrative reveals how communities, classes, and states emerged transnationally through diverse, albeit uneven, cooperative processes.
