  • More about Biodiesel Fuels Based on Edible and Nonedible Feedstocks, Wastes, and Algae: Science, Technology

The Handbook of Biodiesel and Petrodiesel Fuels, Volume 2 presents a comprehensive collection of population papers on biodiesel and petrodiesel fuels, covering various feedstocks, including edible oils, nonedible oils, waste oils, and algal oils. The research focuses on improving biomass and lipid productivity, using wastewaters and flue gases for algal biomass production, and reducing ecological burdens. The book is valuable for academics, professionals, and researchers in the fields of Energy Fuels, Chemical Engineering, Physical Chemistry, Biotechnology, Applied Microbiology, Environmental Sciences, and Thermodynamics.

This second volume of the Handbook of Biodiesel and Petrodiesel Fuels presents a comprehensive collection of population papers in the field of feedstock-specific biodiesel fuels. Initially, the research on biodiesel fuels focused on edible oils as first-generation biodiesel fuels. However, growing public concerns about the competition with food crops and the adverse effects on ecological diversity and deforestation led to the exploration of nonedible-oil-based biodiesel fuels as second-generation biodiesel fuels.

In response to these challenges, waste oil-based biodiesel fuels as third-generation biodiesel fuels have emerged. This shift has been driven by the ecological and cost benefits of waste treatment. Furthermore, in recent years, research has intensified on algal oil-based biodiesel fuels, following influential review papers. Given that the cost of feedstocks accounts for 85% of total biodiesel production costs, there has been a significant focus on improving biomass and lipid productivity in these research fields.

Additionally, given the importance of water, CO2, and nutrients (primarily N and P) in algal biomass and lipid production, research has expanded into the use of wastewaters and flue gases for algal biomass production to reduce ecological burdens and production costs.

Part 1 of the Handbook provides a representative sample of population papers in the field of edible oil-based biodiesel fuels. It covers soybean oil-based biodiesel fuels, palm oil-based biodiesel fuels, and rapeseed oil-based biodiesel fuels as case studies, along with an overview paper.

Part 2 presents a representative sample of population papers in the field of nonedible oil-based biodiesel fuels. These papers explore various nonedible oil feedstocks, such as jatropha oil, sunflower oil, and canola oil, and their potential for biodiesel production. The research covers topics such as oil extraction, pretreatment, biodiesel synthesis, and characterization.

Overall, this Handbook serves as a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers, and industry professionals interested in the development and utilization of biodiesel and petrodiesel fuels. It provides a comprehensive overview of the current state-of-the-art research in feedstock-specific biodiesel fuels, highlighting the key challenges and opportunities in this field.
