Die Kleist-Briefe eröffnen mittels Pierre Bourdieus Begriffsinstrumenten soziale Momentaufnahmen von Kleists widersprüchlich erscheinenden Lebenswelten, in welchen der Akteur als deutscher Dichter sowie als preußischer Offizier soziale Positionen besetzt. Kleists Briefe zeichnen zunächst das Bild eines tief zerrissenen inneren Zustands. Er fühlt sich sozial isoliert, pathologisiert und missverstanden – seine Melancholie erscheint nicht nur als persönliche Krise, sondern als Folge gesellschaftlicher Härte und medizinischer Fehldeutung. Trotz der düsteren Grundstimmung durchziehen diese Briefe auch Momente leiser Hoffnung: Freundschaft bietet Trost, das Schreiben ermöglicht Selbstvergewisserung. Doch zwischen Todessehnsucht, Rückzugsphantasien und dem Wunsch nach einem Neuanfang bleibt eine existenzielle Spannung bestehen. Kleist schwankt zwischen Resignation und einem tastenden Versuch, der Welt doch noch einen Sinn abzuringen.
