- More about Biomarkers of Radiation in the Environment: Robust Tools for Risk Assessment
The NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Biomarkers of Radiation in the Environment: Robust Tools for Risk Assessment (BRITE) brought together experts from cancer research, epigenetics, non-human and human risk assessment to discuss the development of state-of-the-art biomarkers for risk assessment. The book summarizes the workshop's discussions, covering techniques for biomarker development, low-dose effect mechanisms, risk evaluation, wildlife biomarkers, and biomarker use and responses. It serves as a valuable resource for anyone interested in how biomarkers can improve our understanding of radiation in the environment and its potential impacts.

This proceedings volume emerges from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Biomarkers of Radiation in the Environment: Robust Tools for Risk Assessment (BRITE). The BRITE workshop delved into insights from cancer research, epigenetics, non-human and human risk assessment, as numerous state-of-the-art biomarkers being developed for humans warrant consideration for environmental applications, and vice versa. The sessions encompassed a wide range of topics, including methods, mechanisms, cross-disciplinary applications, and regulation.
The chapters in this book have been organized into five major themes that were explored during the BRITE workshop:
Techniques for Biomarker Development: This theme focused on the various techniques employed to develop biomarkers for radiation exposure and its effects. It covered topics such as genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, as well as emerging technologies such as single-cell analysis and microfluidics.
Low-Dose Effect Mechanisms: This theme explored the mechanisms underlying the biological effects of low-dose radiation exposure. It covered topics such as DNA damage, oxidative stress, inflammation, and epigenetic alterations, with an emphasis on understanding the long-term consequences of low-dose radiation on human health.
Biomarkers for Risk Evaluation: This theme explored the use of biomarkers in risk evaluation and assessment of radiation exposure. It covered topics such as dose-response relationships, risk assessment models, and the development of biomarkers for early detection and diagnosis of radiation-related diseases.
Biomarkers in Wildlife: This theme focused on the use of biomarkers to study the effects of radiation in wildlife populations. It covered topics such as radiation-induced mutations, reproductive effects, and ecological impacts, with an emphasis on understanding the vulnerability of wildlife to radiation pollution.
Biomarker Use and Responses: This theme explored the use of biomarkers in monitoring and assessing radiation exposure and its effects on human populations. It covered topics such as epidemiology, biomonitoring, and risk communication, with an emphasis on developing effective strategies for managing radiation risks in various environments.
Each chapter in this book has been written independently by the respective chapter authors, reflecting their individual perspectives on the topics covered. Therefore, readers are encouraged to form their own balanced view of the diverse perspectives on biomarkers of radiation in the environment. Given the breadth of topics addressed and the state-of-the-art perspectives shared by renowned experts in their respective fields, this book is poised to become a valuable resource for anyone interested in leveraging biomarkers to enhance our understanding of radiation in the environment and its potential impacts.
