On January 31, 2010, Trooper Corie Mapp of The Life Guards was on combat operations in Afghanistan when his armoured vehicle ran over an IED. The explosion resulted in severe injuries, but it marked the beginning of a remarkable journey.
Corie's next memory was waking up in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Selly Oak, Birmingham, unaware that he had become a double amputee. Despite the daunting setback, he made an almost miraculous recovery and returned to his regiment in Windsor two months later.
Sport had always been a significant part of Corie's life, and it became even more vital after the explosion. During his rehabilitation, he rediscovered his sporting abilities and excelled in disabled cricket at a national level. He was also a member of Team GB for sitting volleyball and athletics at the Warrior and Invictus Games.
However, when Corie was offered the chance to participate in bobsleigh, his horizons expanded significantly. After just one year of training, he achieved remarkable success. In 2014, he won gold in the inaugural Para Bobsleigh World Cup competition in St. Moritz, finished second overall in the World Cup 2014/15 season, and ultimately became the overall World Cup champion in 2018.
Corie's journey continued in the 2021-22 season, as he remained committed to training and competing at the highest levels in North America and Europe. On the international bobsleigh circuit, he is affectionately known as "Black Ice."
This book is a testament to Corie Mapp's remarkable story of triumph over adversity. It showcases his unwavering determination, resilience, and spirit, demonstrating that nothing can hinder one's pursuit of excellence. Corie's journey is an inspiration to all, reminding us that with hard work, dedication, and a positive mindset, we can overcome any obstacle and achieve greatness.
