  • More about Book of Settlements: The Hauksbok Recension of Landnamabok

Landnámabók is a twelfth-century text that chronicles the settlement of Iceland, copied repeatedly throughout the Middle Ages and later. This new translation by Matthias Egeler emphasizes the text's sense of place, illustrated by photographs. It includes an introduction and index of primary settlers.

Format: Paperback / softback
Length: 202 pages
Publication date: 31 January 2023
Publisher: Viking Society for Northern Research

Landnámabók, believed to have been first compiled in the twelfth century, chronicles the settlement of Iceland through accounts of approximately 430 settlers, their families, and descendants. It underwent numerous copies throughout the Middle Ages and later periods, and remains in various redactions, all of which are fragmentary. This groundbreaking new translation is based on the version created by Haukr Erlendsson in the early fourteenth century, which has never been translated into English before. Matthias Egeler, the translator, pays particular attention to the text's sense of place, as conveyed through the place names bestowed upon the land by the settlers and the anecdotes related to them. The book is adorned with numerous black and white photographs taken by the translator. It also includes an introduction and an index of primary settlers, providing insight into the relationship between the Hauksbók recension and that of Sturlubók.
