The art of Boris Lurie (* 1924,Leningrad) and Wolf Vostell (* 1932,Leverkusen) is deeply influenced by the profound rupture that occurred in Germany in 1933, which paved the way for the horrifying German genocide of German and European Jews, known as the Shoah. Both artists choose to confront this tragic event in a radical and uncompromising manner, making it the central theme of their artistic endeavors. Initially working independently of each other, they employ the versatile medium of painting and, during the 1950s, embrace the stylistic devices of the early avant-garde, including Cubism, Dadaism, and Surrealism. They strategically employ techniques such as collage and assembly to bring their artistic visions to life.

Vostell, in particular, takes the subject matter of the Shoah further into the realm of happenings and video art, pushing the boundaries of artistic expression. On the other hand, Lurie delves into the realm of writing, adding another dimension to his artistic exploration. It is in 1964 that these two remarkable artists meet in New York, forging a lifelong friendship that would endure through the years. Their collaboration and mutual admiration have left an indelible mark on the art world, serving as a testament to the power of art to heal, commemorate, and inspire.
