- More about Bourgery. Atlas of Human Anatomy and Surgery
Jean Baptiste Marc Bourgery (1797–1849) collaborated with illustrator Nicolas Henri Jacob to create the Atlas of Anatomy, a comprehensive and beautifully illustrated anatomical treatise. The first volumes were published in 1831, and the last of the eight volumes was published five years after his death. The atlas covers descriptive anatomy, surgical anatomy and techniques, general anatomy and embryology, and microscopic anatomy. Jacobs' hand-colored lithographs offer exceptional anatomical insight and are still unsurpassed today.

We owe a great debt to Jean Baptiste Marc Bourgery (1797–1849) for his remarkable Atlas of Anatomy, which not only marked a monumental event in medical history but also stands as one of the most comprehensive and beautifully illustrated anatomical treatises ever published. Bourgery embarked on the creation of his magnificent atlas in 1830, collaborating with illustrator Nicolas Henri Jacob (1782–1871), a student of the renowned French painter Jacques Louis David. The first volumes of the atlas were published the following year, but the completion of the treatise required nearly two decades of unwavering dedication from Bourgery. Tragically, he lived just long enough to finish his labor of love, but the last of the treatise's eight volumes was not published in its entirety until five years after his passing.
The eight volumes of Bourgery's treatise encompass a wide range of subjects, including descriptive anatomy, surgical anatomy and techniques (detailing nearly all the major operations performed during the first half of the 19th century), general anatomy and embryology, and microscopic anatomy. Jacobs's spectacular hand-colored lithographs are truly remarkable for their clarity, color, and aesthetic appeal. They reflect a harmonious blend of direct laboratory observation and illustrative research, resulting in images that offer exceptional anatomical insight. These images are not only valuable to those in the medical field but also to artists, students, and anyone with a deep interest in the workings and wonders of the human body.
Bourgery's Atlas of Anatomy stands as a testament to his unwavering dedication and remarkable talent. It remains a cornerstone of medical education and a source of inspiration for generations to come. Through his meticulous work, Bourgery has left an indelible mark on the field of anatomy, and his legacy continues to be celebrated and admired.
