The Ashmolean Museum boasts an extraordinary collection of wood engravings, considered one of the most extensive worldwide. This remarkable collection commenced with a significant donation in 1964 by Arthur Mitchell, comprising over 3,000 prints, including a substantial collection of wood engravings. Over the years, the collection experienced remarkable expansion through the acquisition of large groups of prints, often received as gifts from the artists. This expansion led to a series of monographic exhibitions showcasing some of the most influential wood engravers. These exhibitions featured notable artists such as John Farleigh (1986), John Buckland Wright (1990), Clare Leighton (1992), Monica Poole (1993), and Anne Desmet (1998). A pivotal moment during this period of growth was the acquisition of a comprehensive body of work by Gertrude Hermes and Blair Hughes-Stanton in 1995 from the artists' family. This acquisition resulted in a memorable exhibition organized by Katharine Eustace. More recently, the Ashmolean has established a close partnership with the Society of Wood Engravers (SWE), ensuring the collection remains current by acquiring works by SWE members through both the Society's annual exhibition and private purchases.
