The Falkland Islands, a remote British territory situated approximately 8,000 miles from the UK mainland and just over 400 miles from the coast of Argentina, have been the subject of longstanding disputes regarding their ownership. However, tensions reached a boiling point in March 1982 when a group of individuals raised the Argentine flag on South Georgia. In anticipation of a significant response from British forces, the Argentine government swiftly initiated Operation Rosario and launched an amphibious invasion of the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and the South Sandwich Islands on April 2, 1982. The British task force faced a formidable challenge in retaking the islands, as they lacked air-to-air refuelling capabilities and had limited range to reach the South Atlantic. Fortunately, halfway between Britain and the Falklands, there existed a small forward operating airfield on Ascension Island.

Despite the limitations of their aircraft, the British government planned a full-scale invasion and, within just 74 days, the Argentine forces surrendered. This book offers an informative history of the significant British aircraft types in service with the Royal Navy, RAF, and Army Air Corps during the conflict. It encompasses a diverse range of helicopters, including the iconic Avro Vulcan, Handley Page Victor, and British Aerospace Sea Harrier. With over 150 high-quality images, this book showcases surviving aircraft and explores their current locations, 40 years after the conflict.
