  • More about British Infantryman: The British and Commonwealth Soldier 1939-45

The book "The British and Commonwealth Soldier 1939-45" provides a detailed look at the weapons, uniform, accoutrements, equipment, and tactics of the British infantryman during World War II. Despite starting badly in some campaigns, the British soldiers were victorious in the North African desert, Europe, India, and Burma, where they inflicted significant losses on the Japanese. They also held back the German Panzers in Normandy, chased the Germans back into Holland, and came close to circumventing the Siegfried Line. The book follows the themes of the Haynes Great War British Tommy and German Infantryman Manuals and is written by Simon Forty, an experienced military historian.

The British and Commonwealth Soldier 1939-45: A Comprehensive Examination

British soldiers, known for their traditional helmets, spring-powered PIAT anti-tank guns, and a reverence for heroic defeats, may have fallen short in the propaganda war. However, their record speaks volumes. Despite initial setbacks in France in 1940 and the Far East in 1941, they emerged victorious in the North African desert, Europe, India, and Burma, where the "Forgotten Army" inflicted significant losses on the Japanese. In Normandy in 1944, they held back the might of the Panzers, chased the Germans back into Holland, and came within a hair's breadth of bypassing the Siegfried Line. They continued to win battles against a determined defense on their way to ultimate victory.

This book does not delve into the broader progress of the Second World War but instead focuses on providing a detailed examination of the weapons, uniforms, accoutrements, equipment, and tactics of the British infantryman during that era. It follows the same themes as the Haynes Great War British Tommy and German Infantryman Manuals.

Author Simon Forty holds a degree from Sedbergh School and London University's School of Slavonic and East European Studies. With over three decades of experience in publishing, he specializes in military history, having contributed to numerous books. He also served as the general editor of World War I: A Visual Encyclopedia. Simon currently resides in Devon with his wife and two children.
