Claudia is excited when she hears that her newest baby-sitting charge, Betsy Sobak, is a big practical joker. She believes that how much harm can one little girl do? Plenty. However, Claudia's excitement turns to concern when she breaks her leg as a result of one of Betsy's jokes. She starts to feel that baby-sitting might be too dangerous and considers quitting the club.
Kristy, Claudia's best friend, disagrees with her. She thinks that Betsy needs to be taught a lesson and that the baby-sitters are the perfect ones to do it. Kristy suggests that they start a joke war against Betsy.
Betsy is unaware of the impending joke war, and she continues to play pranks on the baby-sitters. However, the baby-sitters are determined to get back at her. They plan various tricks and pranks to teach Betsy a lesson.
As the joke war progresses, things start to get out of hand. The baby-sitters start to take their pranks too far, and they begin to hurt each other's feelings. Claudia, who was initially against the joke war, realizes that it has gone too far and decides to stop it.
Kristy, however, is determined to see it through to the end. She continues to play pranks on Betsy, even though she knows that it is causing harm to Claudia and the other baby-sitters.
In the end, Claudia and Kristy realize that their joke war has gone too far. They apologize to each other and promise to stop playing pranks on each other. They also decide to focus on their baby-sitting duties and help the children they care for.
The story teaches us the importance of friendship, the consequences of our actions, and the importance of putting others before ourselves. It is a timeless classic that has entertained children for generations, and it will continue to do so for many years to come.
