Caley Cross has always known she's not a "normal" thirteen-year-old. Her ability to create zombie animals was her first clue. Still, she never expected to be whisked off to a faraway world—Erinath—where she is Crown Princess and people have "baests" that live inside them, giving them fantastic, animal-like powers. Which would be cool, except that Caley's "baest" turns out to be an ancient monster that can swallow planets. Despite this, Caley manages to make the first friends of her life, Neive Olander and Kipley Gorsebrooke. They help her navigate the Erinath Academy, where students train to compete in the annual—and deadly—Equidium contest, flying giant, dragonfly-like orocs. But to add to her usual (bad) luck, an evil "Watcher" known as Olpheist is seeking her, anxious to retrieve something that will make him immortal.

Caley Cross has always been different. She knew from a young age that she didn't fit in with the other kids her age. Her ability to create zombie animals was just the tip of the iceberg. But when she's transported to the mysterious world of Erinath, she discovers that her differences are even more extraordinary than she ever imagined.

In Erinath, people have "baests" that live inside them, giving them incredible powers and abilities. Caley's "baest" is an ancient monster that can swallow planets. At first, she's terrified of her powers and doesn't know how to control them. But with the help of her new friends, Neive and Kipley, she learns to harness her "baest" and use it for good.

At the Erinath Academy, Caley is trained to compete in the annual Equidium contest, a deadly competition that pits students against each other in a battle of wits and strength. The winner of the Equidium is crowned the new Crown Princess and given the power to rule the kingdom. Caley is determined to win, but she soon realizes that the competition is not as simple as it seems.

As she competes against her fellow students, Caley discovers that there is a dark force at work in Erinath. An evil "Watcher" named Olpheist is seeking revenge against the royal family and will stop at nothing to achieve his goals. Caley must use all of her skills and powers to defeat Olpheist and protect her friends and the kingdom.

With the help of her friends and her "baest," Caley is able to defeat Olpheist and save the kingdom. She is crowned the new Crown Princess and is hailed as a hero. But she knows that her journey is far from over. There are still many challenges and dangers ahead, and she must be prepared to face them.

In the end, Caley learns that her differences are not a weakness but a strength. She has discovered that she can use her powers to help others and to make a difference in the world. And she knows that she will always be a "normal" thirteen-year-old, but with the powers of an ancient monster and the courage of a hero.
