  • More about Camel: Every Album, Every Song (On Track)

Camel is a progressive rock band that originated in Guildford, Surrey, England, in 1971. They were heavily influenced by Canterbury-based bands and seamlessly integrated Middle Eastern, North African, Jazz, folk, and classical elements into their music. After two critically acclaimed but unsuccessful albums, they gained transatlantic attention in 1975 with the release of The Snow Goose, inspired by Paul Gallico's novella. The album's chart success solidified their place in progressive rock history, and the band continues to perform to rapturous receptions worldwide, led by founder Andy Latimer.

Camel, a prominent force in progressive rock during the 1970s, captivated audiences worldwide with their captivating performances. Founded in Guildford, Surrey, England, in 1971, the band drew inspiration from the emerging bands in Canterbury, Kent, showcasing a unique blend of humor and profoundity reminiscent of bands like Caravan and Hatfield and the North. However, what set Camel apart was their seamless integration of Middle Eastern, North African, Jazz, folk, and classical elements, creating an exciting and exotic new strand in the flourishing world of progressive rock.

After releasing two critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful albums, Camel gained international recognition in 1975 with the release of their purely instrumental album, "The Snow Goose." Inspired by Paul Gallico's novella of the same name, the album's chart success led to a sold-out performance at the Royal Albert Hall in October 1975, solidifying Camel's place in the ongoing narrative of progressive rock.

Under the guidance of founder Andy Latimer, who remains at the helm after nearly 50 years and fourteen studio albums, Camel continues to deliver mesmerizing performances that leave audiences in awe. This track-by-track analysis takes the reader on a journey through Camel's remarkable half-century career, carving out a special and inimitable niche in British rock music.
