  • More about Canadian Pacific Ships: The History of a Company and its Ships

In 1873, the Canadian Pacific Railway was established to build the first railway across Canada. It expanded into shipping, chartering ships from the Cunard Line, and in 1889, it was awarded the mail contract for the service across the Pacific. By 1903, it had purchased Elder Dempster & Company and began sailing from Liverpool to Quebec and Montreal. It eventually controlled the Atlantic, rail, and Pacific routes and had an interest in the Canadian-Australasian Line, becoming the world's greatest transportation system. CP Ships was Canada's largest operator of Atlantic and Pacific steamships until after the Second World War, boasting such names as the Empress of Britain, Empress of Ireland, and Empress of Canada.

In 1873, a company was established with the ambitious goal of constructing the very first railway across Canada. However, this venture was not limited to mere rail transportation, as it swiftly expanded into the realm of shipping. The company began chartering ships from the renowned Cunard Line, offering services between Vancouver, Yokohama, Shanghai, and Hong Kong.

Fast forward to 1889, and Canadian Pacific was awarded the prestigious mail contract for the service across the Pacific. By 1903, the company had acquired Elder Dempster & Company and commenced sailing from Liverpool to Quebec and Montreal. With this acquisition, Canadian Pacific gained control over the Atlantic, rail, and Pacific routes, effectively establishing itself as the world's most comprehensive transportation system. This remarkable system not only bridged two oceans but also interconnected four continents, revolutionizing the way people traveled and traded.

Until the aftermath of the Second World War, Canadian Pacific Ships, known for their grandeur and elegance, held a prominent position as Canadas largest operator of Atlantic and Pacific steamships. Some of these iconic vessels included the Empress of Britain, Empress of Ireland, and Empress of Canada. This new history of Canadian Pacific's shipping endeavors is packed with a wealth of illustrations and a comprehensive fleet list that will captivate maritime enthusiasts with its rich details.
