  • More about Capitalism in Crisis?: The European Periphery and Emerging Economies

Economic downturns in Brazil, Russia, and China were caused by domestic issues such as patrimonialism, corruption, and informality. This book theorizes and analyzes the evolving nature of capitalism in emerging economies and the European periphery in the face of globalization and economic crises. It draws on late Uwe Beckers open qualitative approach and integrates the state into the analysis. The contributors analyze different responses to crises by the BRICs and countries of the Southern European periphery and develop a dynamic theory of capitalist change.

The recent economic downturns in Brazil, Russia, and even China have raised concerns due to their occurrence against the backdrop of domestic issues related to patrimonialism, corruption, and informality. These challenges not only affected these countries but also had ripple effects on the economies of the European periphery, leading to recession as a result of economic crisis and austerity policies implemented in their wake. This book aims to theorize and analyze the evolving nature of capitalism in emerging economies (the BRICs) and the European periphery in the face of the pressures of globalization and economic crises.

The volume seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of these crises and their impact by employing the framework of comparative capitalism, while also exploring its applicability beyond the advanced industrialized countries for which it was initially developed. The authors draw upon the insights of late Uwe Beckers open qualitative approach, systematically integrating the state into the analysis while paying close attention to the role of changing ideas, the character of international integration, leadership, and informality.

The contributors to this book examine diverse responses to crises by the BRICs and countries of the Southern European periphery, as well as the various dimensions of state-business interaction. Their findings contribute to the theorization of varieties of capitalism beyond the OECD world and to the development of a dynamic theory of capitalist change in the face of pressures from globalization and economic crises.

The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Contemporary Politics, highlighting the importance of this topic and the insights it offers.
