Tom Hicks' remarkable journey begins with his enlistment in the LMS shortly after completing his education in the 1930s. His early years were spent on the railways, encompassing various experiences such as enlistment, training as a paratrooper, wartime service, imprisonment, and his eventual return to the LMS as an engine driver.

In 1939, Tom volunteered for war service and was initially assigned to the military railway of the Royal Engineers. Driven by a thirst for adventure, he successfully applied to join the newly formed 1st Parachute Squadron of the Royal Engineers. The rigorous and demanding parachute training that followed is vividly depicted, along with the camaraderie and humor that emerged among this small 150-man unit as they fought valiantly throughout the Second World War as part of the 1st Parachute Brigade.

The excitement of the initial parachute jumps is relived, along with the parachute operations in North Africa, Sicily, and the pivotal Battle of Arnhem. It was during this intense battle that Tom faced the harrowing experience of being wounded and taken prisoner after nine days of fierce fighting alongside his comrades. Following the battle, Tom was transported to Germany as a forced laborer in a lead mine until he was liberated by American forces in 1945.

With insightful commentary provided by Tom's son Norman, this narrative delves into the life of an ordinary soldier who was driven by a profound sense of pride in his unit. Despite being offered the opportunity to return home twice to support the struggling railway system, Tom's commitment to his unit prevailed, and he remained in the army. Tom's recounting of his experiences is done with a keen eye and a resilient sense of humor, which have consistently helped him overcome adversity throughout his remarkable journey.
