Carl Pruscha (born 1936) is an Austrian architect who has made significant contributions to the fields of architecture and urban planning. This monograph explores his life and legacy in three geographical areas: the United States, Kathmandu, and Vienna. Pruscha's early education in architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna was followed by a period of study at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, where he sought inspiration and visions, a balance between work and free time, and a desire for freedom and self-determination. In 1964, the United Nations invited Pruscha to Nepal, where he established himself as a practicing architect and worked on various construction projects, including the Kathmandu Valley Development and Preservation Project. This experience allowed him to observe and document, plan and build, and examine roles, status, and privileges in society. Upon his return to Vienna in 1978, Pruscha became a professor and later the head of the Academy of Fine Arts. His academic and societal influence brought to light the differences between teaching and practice in architecture and made him a defining figure in the city. The monograph includes photographic portfolios by Iwan Baan and Hertha Hurnaus, numerous project documentations, and a detailed timeline that illustrates the geopolitical, cultural, and technological developments surrounding Pruscha's life and times.
