Catastrophe by the Sea is a children's book that tells the story of a lost cat who befriends an anemone in a tide pool. The book aims to promote empathy for animals and educate on the diverse wildlife in tide pools, in partnership with the Seattle Aquarium.

Publisher: West Margin Press

From the acclaimed nature writer Brenda Peterson and brought to life through stunning and vibrant mixed-media collages by Caldecott Medalist Ed Young, Catastrophe by the Sea is a poignant tale of redemption through empathy and compassion discovered in the most unexpected of places. Moreover, it offers a profound insight into the intricate lives of small creatures that inhabit a perilous tidal zone.

A lost cat prowls the tide pools, its paws relentlessly pounding against the tiny inhabitants that call them home. One fateful day, an anemone confronts him, questioning his solitude and offering a friendship. In a collaborative effort with the Seattle Aquarium, Catastrophe by the Sea delivers a powerful message of discovering understanding and camaraderie, while also imparting valuable knowledge about the diverse wildlife thriving in tide pools.

For several years, the Seattle Aquarium has delved into the role of empathy in fostering conservation. Empathy encompasses the ability to perceive, comprehend, and show care for the experiences or perspectives of another person or animal. While we often express empathy towards humans, it is also possible to feel empathy for animals. This inspired us to conceive a children's book. Animals frequently serve as the main characters in children's literature, often featuring charismatic vertebrates. Could we create a book that would enable kids and their caregivers to empathize with peculiar and exotic marine animals, such as sea anemones or barnacles? We aspire for this book to resonate with audiences and cultivate empathy for animals that differ from us.
