Raoul de Houdenc, a prominent figure in 13th-century French literature, was widely regarded by his contemporaries as a master of poetry alongside Chrétien de Troyes. The writers of later romances held his work in high esteem, comparing it to the esteemed Prose Lancelot and elevating him to the same level of authority. Raoul's literary contributions were diverse and remarkable. Among his surviving works, he crafted an impassioned tract titled "The Romance of the Wings," which delved into the values of chivalry. He also produced two outstanding Arthurian romances: "Meraugis of Portlesguez" and "The Avenging of Raguidel." Additionally, Raoul's polemic against declining standards, particularly among the bourgeoisie, titled "The Burgess's Burgeoning Blight," showcased his sharp wit and social commentary. Raoul's innovative spirit was evident in his groundbreaking satire "The Dream of Hell," which was the first allegory composed in the vernacular. He mastered the art of parody and surprise, leaving a lasting impact on French literature. Despite a period of neglect, Raoul is now receiving the scholarly attention he truly deserves. This English translation of his complete surviving works marks a significant milestone in his recognition. Among his remarkable achievements, "The Avenging of Raguidel" stands out as one of the most fascinating and innovative French Gawain romances. Norris J. Lacy, in his review, praises the novel for its captivating storytelling and its innovative approach to the Arthurian legend.
