The Society for Christian Scholarship in Music (SCSM) is a group of scholars dedicated to exploring the intersections of Christian faith and musical scholarship. This essay collection, devoted to exploring the richness of Christian musical traditions in the Americas, reflects the distinctive critical perspectives of the Society. In our sixteenth year, we seek to celebrate our work in the world and bring it to a larger audience by offering a cross-section of the most outstanding scholarship from an international array of writers. The proposed collection follows a first collection published to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of the Society (Exploring Christian Song, M. Jennifer Bloxam and Andrew Shenton, editors, Lexington Books, 2017). That first volume focused on Christian song in a variety of different contexts. Our proposed collection surveys a broad geographical area and demonstrates the enormous diversity of music-making and scholarship within that area. While there are some studies that focus on a single country or region and its sacred music (see the literature survey below), this will be the first collection to present a representative cross-section of the range of sacred music in the Americas and the approaches to studying them in context. The essays in this collection are ecumenical, reflecting the breadth of Christian traditions. The essays include several by distinguished senior scholars in the field (including David Music, Baylor University; and Jeff Warren, Quest University, Canada). Several essays are by noted specialists in the field (including Jesse Karlsberg, Emory University; and Cathy Ann Elias, DePaul University), and several by younger scholars (including Hannah Denecke, Florida State University; and Natasha Walsh, York University, Canada). SCSM is particularly interested in the ways in which music can be used to promote social justice and human rights, and in the ways in which music can be used to connect people across cultural and linguistic boundaries. The collection will include essays on a wide range of topics, including: • The history of Christian music in the Americas • The role of music in Christian worship • The impact of music on Christian identity • The relationship between music and spirituality • The use of music in evangelism and mission • The role of music in social justice and human rights • The impact of music on cultural identity • The use of music in interfaith dialogue • The role of music in education • The use of music in therapy • The role of music in the arts • The use of music in the media • The use of music in religious tourism • The use of music in the digital age • The use of music in the global context The essays in this collection will be written by scholars from a wide range of disciplines, including musicology, theology, religious studies, and cultural studies. The collection will be edited by a team of experienced scholars and will include a comprehensive bibliography and index. We believe that this collection will make a significant contribution to the field of Christian music scholarship and will help to promote the work of the Society for Christian Scholarship in Music. We invite you to submit your essays for consideration for publication in this collection. Submissions should be sent to the editor at [email address] by [date]. We look forward to receiving your submissions and to celebrating the richness of Christian musical traditions in the Americas with you.
