  • More about Churchill's Eagles: The RAF's Leading Air Marshals of the Second World War

The RAF did not come of age until the Second World War, with Lord Trenchard determined to make it a fully-fledged third service. By 1939, only the Supermarine Spitfire was in service, but the leaders of the RAF would take the battle to the enemy and prevail after six long years.

The Royal Air Force (RAF) did not reach its full potential until the Second World War. While the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service played important roles in the Great War, their contributions were secondary to those of the ground forces. Lord Trenchard, the founder of the RAF, envisioned it as a fully-fledged third service, on par with the Royal Navy and British Army. To achieve this, he established the RAF College at Cranwell and the Staff College at Andover, and provided a cost-effective policeman for the more rebellious parts of the British Empire. By 1939, the RAF had grown significantly, but only one of the three best aircraft of the coming War, the Supermarine Spitfire, was in service. The Avro Lancaster and the De Havilland Mosquito would not be available until early 1942. However, aircraft alone were not enough. It was the leaders of the RAF, the subjects of this book, who would take the battle to the enemy and ultimately prevail after six long years.
