Clarice Cliff was a renowned ceramic designer of the 20th century, born in 1899 in the Staffordshire Potteries. Despite starting as a factory girl, she launched her own pottery range, 'Bizarre,' in 1928, which became a 'gargantuan feast of color' and blazed a trail through the homes of inter-war Britain. Her remarkable rise from an apprentice gilder to an art director was even more remarkable considering her gender. However, her journey was not without its challenges, as she maintained a secret relationship with her married boss for years. Cliff's work fused art, design, and industry, capturing the texture of women's lives between the wars. It is considered the epitome of art deco and is a compelling study of the complex and talented woman whose work continues to be celebrated today.
