However, a glimmer of hope emerged in the early 2010s when a small fleet of Class 60s underwent a thorough rebuilding program. These refurbished locomotives were tasked with hauling DB Schenker's heaviest trains, and eventually, 21 units were refurbished for this purpose, along with ten for Colas Rail and four for Devon & Cornwall Railways.

While the majority of the Class 60 fleet remains in storage, with an uncertain future, this refurbishment program has ensured that a select few examples will remain visible on the national network for a few more years.
