The Class 60 was a remarkable feat of engineering, representing the final iteration of truly British-built diesel locomotive design. Its production commenced in 1990, with a total of 100 units destined for the Railfreight sectors of Metal, Coal, Construction, and Petroleum. While the introduction of these locomotives was not without its challenges, they eventually became reliable and saw the retirement of older, fatigued classes.

The privatization of the Class 60 saw these locomotives sold to English, Welsh & Scottish Railways, with the first unit withdrawn in 2004. However, a glimmer of hope emerged in the early 2010s when a small fleet of Class 60s underwent a thorough rebuilding program. These refurbished locomotives were tasked with hauling DB Schenker's heaviest trains, and eventually, 21 units were refurbished for this purpose, along with ten for Colas Rail and four for Devon & Cornwall Railways.

While the majority of the Class 60 fleet remains in storage, with an uncertain future, this refurbishment program has ensured that a select few examples will remain visible on the national network for a few more years. This comprehensive volume, adorned with over 190 photographs, provides a detailed account of the Class 60's journey from its early days to the end of the 2010s. It serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of British engineering and the resilience of these iconic locomotives.
