Class 70 locomotives were built by General Electric for Freightliner in the late 2000s to expand their locomotive fleet. The new Class 70 was a 3,690bhp locomotive with a focus on reliability and efficiency. This book contains images of every Class 70 locomotive, except the ill-fated 70012, over the last decade or so that they have been in service, mostly in the south of England.

The company sought a departure from the newest and most common locomotives running on its network, opting for Class 66s built by General Motors. However, Freightliner chose General Electric to construct these new machines and placed an initial order for 20 locomotives, with an option for a further ten.
The new Class 70 locomotives were a significant departure from the Class 66s, boasting a 3,690bhp power output and a focus on reliability and efficiency. While Freightliner declined to take up the option of the further ten locos, they were eventually acquired by Colas Rail.
