  • More about Cloven Country: The Devil and the English Landscape

The English landscape is said to be the work of the Devil, with cloven country and valleys carved out by infernal labour. The Devil's strength laid down great roads in one night, leaving scars everywhere as the hard stone melted like wax under his burning feet. However, humans can outwit him, with smart cobbler or cunning young wife outwitting him, striking a blow for the underdog. Only the wicked squire and grasping merchant were beyond redemption, carried off by a black huntsman in the storm.

The English landscape, often perceived as serene on the surface, is believed to be the work of the Devil. Cloven Country recounts the tale of rocks being hurled into place and valleys being carved out through infernal labor. The Devil's immense strength allowed him to construct vast roads in a single night, leaving behind scars as the hard stone melted like wax beneath his burning feet. This legend has its roots in medieval folklore and portrays the Devil as a clumsy ogre, easily deceived by humans. When individuals, such as a clever cobbler or a resourceful young wife, outsmarted the Devil, they dealt a blow to the underdog. However, there were exceptions, as the wicked squire and the grasping merchant were beyond redemption, carried away by a black huntsman during a storm.
