  • More about Coevolutionary Pragmatism: Approaches and Impacts of China-Africa Economic Cooperation

This book explores the nature and effects of China-Africa economic ties, proposing a non-linear circular causality model to understand Chinese approaches to cooperation. It highlights the mutual influences between Chinese and African stakeholders and illustrates the effects of coevolving industrialization.

Format: Paperback / softback
Length: 300 pages
Publication date: 18 August 2022
Publisher: Cambridge University Press

The China-Africa economic relationship has witnessed a remarkable surge in growth since the 2000s, generating widespread debate about its nature and consequences. A central question revolves around whether Chinese engagements offer an alternative framework to established mainstream models such as the Washington Consensus for developing countries. However, existing theories on the state-market dichotomy struggle to adequately explain the robust momentum of bilateral cooperation. By conducting extensive field research across various practices, including trade, infrastructure, agriculture, manufacturing, industrial zones, labor, and socio-environmental preservation, this book presents a novel perspective on non-linear circular causality to understand Chinese approaches to working with Africa. Rather than being bound by specific models, Chinese actors are able to experiment with diverse methods to promote structural transformation in Africa. The author meticulously documents mutual influences between Chinese and African stakeholders at all levels, from grassroots to policymaking, to illustrate the effects of coevolving industrialization.
