  • More about Cognitive Science: Integrative Synchronization Mechanisms in Cognitive Neuroarchitectures of Modern Connectionism

The Mind and Brain are a complex dynamical system, where information processing is described through vector and tensor transformations and attractors in multidimensional state spaces. An internal neurocognitive representation concept filters out statistical prototypes from sensorial information, forming a basis for dynamic predictions and hypotheses. This representation is based on self-regulatory complex dynamics of synchronous self-organization mechanisms, resulting in an emergent flux equilibrium process of neural activity. Perception and language processing are modeled using vector- and oscillation-based representations, bridging the neuronal and cognitive analysis levels.

The Mind and Brain are often regarded as a single, intricate, nonlinear dynamical system, where information processing can be described through vector and tensor transformations, as well as the presence of attractors in multidimensional state spaces. Consequently, an internal neurocognitive representation concept encompasses a dynamic process that filters out statistical prototypes from sensory information, utilizing coherent and adaptive n-dimensional vector fields. These prototypes serve as a foundation for dynamic, probabilistic predictions or probabilistic hypotheses on forthcoming new data, exemplified by the recently introduced approach of predictive coding in neurophilosophy. Furthermore, the phenomenon of sensory and language cognition would be grounded in a multitude of self-regulatory complex dynamics of synchronous self-organization mechanisms, essentially representing an emergent flux equilibrium process (steady state) of the collective and coherent neural activity generated by the oscillatory actions of neuronal assemblies.

In perception, it is demonstrated how sensory object information, such as object color or form, can be dynamically interconnected or integrated into a neurally based representation of this perceptual object through a synchronization mechanism (feature binding). In language processing, it is shown how semantic concepts and syntactic roles can be dynamically related to one another or integrated into neurally based systematic and compositional connectionist representations through a synchronization mechanism (variable binding), effectively addressing the Fodor-Pylyshyn-Challenge.

The success of systemtheoretical connectionism in modeling sensory objects in perception and systematic and compositional representations in language processing underscores the interconnectedness and complexity of the human cognitive system.
