Comedians provide us with an exclusive and revealing look behind the scenes of the British comedy scene. Steve Best's own years on the comedy circuit have taken him to every corner of the globe, and have earned him the trust of some of the funniest people on it. This trust has given him an open door to the four corners of their dressing rooms. Being in the right place at the right time is crucial, and Best's mastery of photographic timing is impeccable.

At the Ealing Comedy Festival, Best captured a fleeting look exchanged between Julian Clary and the compere Paul Thorne. This look was as deep as it was fleeting, and it revealed a camaraderie and affection between the two comedians. There was admiration, well-wishing, and gratefulness, as well as a shared adrenalin rush.

Best's image of Barry Cryer shows a whole career in the mirror, and we can't tell whether the name-call is about to happen or is as long gone as any of the nerves that used to go with it. Jack Whitehall is another example of a comedian who takes his craft seriously and plans his material meticulously. Harry Hill is portrayed as meticulous and hard-working in the moments of stillness that Best captures.

Overall, Best's photographs provide us with a unique insight into the world of British comedy, and into the lives and careers of the comedians who inhabit it. His mastery of photographic timing is faultless, and his images are powerful and evocative.
