Nobody disputes the importance of trust in schools for achieving educational outcomes. However, trust is frequently eroded, leading to conflicts, alienation, and differentiation among school-level stakeholders. This book examines school-based management (SBM) of education through the lens of relational trust in the context of Ghana, revealing how community participation in school management leads to educational outcomes.
To conduct the study, quantitative analysis of headteacher questionnaires from public basic schools and qualitative analysis of case study schools in the Akatsi South District of Ghana were conducted. Shibuya provides critical insights into building sustainable relationships between individual households and geographical/school communities through his analysis. He argues that relational trust should be considered an analytical tool to examine relationships between actors and factors in school management.
The research findings indicate that trust in schools operates as a two-way mechanism, and the mutual understanding of expectations and obligations among stakeholders is crucial for improving children's learning outcomes. This book offers valuable insights for scholars in comparative education, educational development, and those interested in African contexts.
