Mickey and his team of cornermen have had a string of bad luck in the boxing world. The fighters they manage always end up losing, and after a disastrous last outing, no one wants to work with them. All that changes when they sign Sid, a young boxer with a winning way that catapults them into a world of success they've never had before. However, you can't win them all, and soon Mickey has to choose between the life he's enjoying and the well-being of his young charge.

Oli Forsyth's play "Cornermen" premiered at the Old Red Lion in London in July 2015, before the 2015 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. It was performed at the VAULT Festival in London in March 2016. The play was revived in 2018 on a UK tour.

The play is a tragic and funny exploration of the boxing world and the relationships between boxers, their managers, and their fans. Mickey and his team are a group of misfits who have never been able to make it big in the boxing world. They are always on the lookout for the next big thing, but they never seem to find it.

When they sign Sid, they think they've found the next big thing. Sid is a young boxer with a lot of talent and a winning way. He quickly becomes a sensation in the boxing world, and Mickey and his team are riding high on his success. However, as Sid's success grows, so does his ego. He starts to demand more money and more privileges, and he becomes difficult to manage.

Mickey is caught in the middle. He loves Sid and wants to see him succeed, but he also knows that he can't let Sid's ego get out of control. He tries to keep Sid grounded and focused, but it's a difficult task. Sid starts to lose fights, and Mickey and his team are worried that their success is about to come to an end.

As Sid's career starts to decline, Mickey is forced to make a difficult decision. He has to choose between the life he's enjoying and the well-being of his young charge. Mickey knows that Sid is in a bad place, and he can't let him continue to spiral down. He decides to take Sid off the radar and to focus on other fighters.

This decision is not easy for Mickey. He knows that he's letting Sid down, but he also knows that he can't continue to support him if he's not willing to work hard and to stay focused. Sid is angry and hurt by Mickey's decision, and he blames him for his decline. He starts to drink heavily and to spiral out of control.

Mickey is worried about Sid, but he also knows that he can't let him drag him down. He tries to stay in touch with Sid, but Sid is distant and unresponsive. Mickey is forced to watch as Sid's life falls apart.

The play is a powerful exploration of the human condition and the sacrifices that people are willing to make for the people they love. Mickey is a flawed character, but he is a good man who is trying to do the right thing. Sid is a talented boxer, but he is also a selfish and egotistical man who is willing to sacrifice everything for his own success.

The play is also a commentary on the boxing world and the way that it is often portrayed in popular culture. The boxing world is often seen as a glamorous and exciting world, but the reality is often much more complicated and difficult. The play shows the darker side of the boxing world, the side that is often ignored or overlooked.

Overall, "Cornermen" is a powerful and moving play that explores the human condition and the sacrifices that people are willing to make for the people they love. It is a tragic and funny exploration of the boxing world and the relationships between boxers, their managers, and their fans. It is a must-see for anyone who loves theatre and who wants to see a powerful and moving exploration of the human condition.
