The purpose of this book is to honor the influential and wide-ranging work of Professor Clive Walker. It explores Professor Walkers influence from three perspectives. Firstly, it provides a historical reflection upon the development of the law and policy in relation to counter-terrorism and miscarriages of justice since the 1970s. This historical perspective, which is often overlooked, is particularly timely 17 years after 9/11 as trends become clearer and historical perspective even more valuable. So too with miscarriages of justice: while there was considerable public and political scrutiny following high-profile miscarriages such as the Birmingham Six, Guildford Four, and others, in the early 1990s, today there is much less scrutiny, despite significant concern relating to issues such as legal aid and access to justice increasing the potential (if not likelihood) for miscarriages to occur. By including a critical historical perspective, this book enables us to learn lessons from the past and to minimize contemporary risks of miscarriages of justice.

Secondly, this book provides a critical analysis of the law and policy as it stands today, and its future trajectory. Applying Walkers theoretical and analytical contributions to the field, the authors focus on pressing contemporary concerns, identifying lacunae where relevant, as well as the possible, probable, and preferable future trends. Finally, the book celebrates and recognizes the significant contributions by Walker, with each chapter built around one or more of Walkers key works.

The book is divided into three parts. The first part provides a historical overview of the development of the law and policy in relation to counter-terrorism and miscarriages of justice since the 1970s. It explores the political, social, and legal factors that have shaped these issues and the ways in which they have been addressed by governments and legal systems around the world. The second part offers a critical analysis of the law and policy as it stands today. It examines the strengths and weaknesses of the current legal framework and identifies areas where it could be improved. The third part celebrates and recognizes the significant contributions by Professor Walker to the field of law and policy. It includes chapters that are built around one or more of Walkers key works, providing a deeper understanding of his theoretical and analytical contributions.

One of the key themes of the book is the importance of a critical historical perspective in understanding the development of law and policy in relation to counter-terrorism and miscarriages of justice. The authors argue that by examining the past, we can learn lessons from the mistakes that have been made and apply them to minimize the risk of future miscarriages. This is particularly important in the context of 9/11, where the response to terrorism was swift and sweeping, and where the legal framework was inadequate to prevent the abuse of power and the violation of human rights.

Another theme of the book is the need for a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to the study of law and policy in relation to counter-terrorism and miscarriages of justice. The authors argue that these issues are complex and multifaceted, and that a single-disciplinary approach is insufficient to understand them fully. They suggest that a combination of legal, political, social, and cultural analysis is necessary to develop a comprehensive understanding of these issues and to develop effective solutions.

The book also highlights the significant contributions by Professor Walker to the field of law and policy. It explores his theoretical and analytical contributions to the study of counter-terrorism and miscarriages of justice, and how they have influenced the development of law and policy in this area. The authors also discuss the impact of Walkers work on the lives of individuals who have been affected by these issues, and how his work has contributed to the fight for justice and human rights.

In conclusion, this book is a valuable contribution to the field of law and policy in relation to counter-terrorism and miscarriages of justice. It provides a critical historical perspective, a critical analysis of the law and policy as it stands today, and a celebration and recognition of the significant contributions by Professor Walker. By examining the past and the present, and by developing a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to the study of these issues, the book aims to minimize the risk of future miscarriages and to promote justice and human rights around the world.
