On January 31, 2020, Newcastle Hospitals proudly stood as the inaugural healthcare facility in the United Kingdom to welcome patients afflicted with the novel illness known as Covid-19. At that moment, Tom Warburton, a senior director at Newcastle City Council, played a pivotal role in orchestrating the city's comprehensive responses to the Covid pandemic. Recognizing his passion for photography, Tom seized an exceptional opportunity to document the profound impact of the pandemic on Newcastle and its resilient inhabitants during one of the most challenging periods in recent history. Over the course of the next two years, with limited access to some of the most sensitive and strategically vital areas of the ongoing battle against the virus, Tom meticulously captured a range of emotions, including sorrow, desperation, and remarkable achievements and sacrifices of the courageous individuals on the front lines of the pandemic response.
Tom's photographs will serve as a invaluable historical record, encapsulating one of the most significant and peculiar chapters in Newcastle's history. Moreover, they will serve as a fitting tribute to those who selflessly risked their lives to assist others and deliver life-saving services. A portion of the sales revenue from the book will be donated to Newcastle Hospitals Charity and the West End Food Bank, further supporting the ongoing efforts to combat the pandemic and alleviate the suffering of those in need.
