The COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom witnessed a significant surge in the prevalence of shame, shaming, and stigma as part of the country's public health response. From healthcare workers being subjected to insults in the streets to instances of anti-Asian racism, the online shaming of "Covidiots" and the stigmatization of individuals in Leicester, public animosity towards the pandemic found scapegoats for its frustrations. The UK government's interventions, rather than mitigating these phenomena, exacerbated them. Instead of implementing robust strategies to address shame, the government's healthcare policies and rhetoric seemed to exacerbate experiences of shame, shaming, and stigma, relying on language and logic that fostered oppositional and antagonistic thinking while obscuring its own responsibilities.
This thought-provoking book explores the various ways in which shame, shaming, and stigma became integral to the UK's response to COVID-19 through a series of six case studies drawn from the events of 2020. It identifies a systemic failure to manage shame-producing circumstances in the country. Ultimately, it addresses the experience of shame as a crucial, often overlooked, consequence of pandemic politics, advocating for a shame-sensitive approach to public health responses.
