- More about Crusaders and Revolutionaries of the Thirteenth Century: De Montfort
The de Montfort family rose to prominence in the thirteenth century, gaining leadership in the Albigensian wars and lordships around the Mediterranean. They married into the English aristocracy and participated in crusades to the Holy Land and the south of France. Simon de Montfort (VI) led a rebellion against Henry III of England, establishing the first parliamentary state in Europe. The family's decline began with Simon's defeat and death in 1265, and they scandalized Europe with a vengeful political murder. Eleanor de Montfort, the last Princess of Wales, died in childbirth, and her daughter was raised as a nun.

The de Montforts were a prominent family that thrived during the 13th century, emerging from a hamlet near Paris in France. Their rise to prominence was fueled by the fervent crusading spirit of that era, leading them from commanding positions in the Albigensian wars to lordship over territories around the Mediterranean. The family's influence extended to marrying into the English aristocracy and participating in various crusades, including the Holy Land and a subsequent campaign in the south of France against the Cathars.
One of the most controversial figures in the de Montfort family's history was Simon de Montfort (V), who was entrusted with the stewardship during the conflict with the Cathars. His son Simon de Montfort (VI) is perhaps the most well-known member of the family. His rebellion against Henry III of England ultimately led to the establishment of the first parliamentary state in Europe. However, the decline of the de Montfort family began with Simon's defeat and death at Evesham in 1265.
Initially, the family managed to revive their fortunes under the new king of Sicily, but they soon scandalized Europe with a vengeful political murder. By this time, the crusades era was drawing to a close, and the remaining de Montforts faced either extinction or expulsion. Tragically, Eleanor de Montfort, the last Princess of Wales, died in childbirth, and her daughter was raised as a nun.
