  • More about Crusaders of Art and Design 1920-1970

Crusaders for art and design were men and women who gave their energy, talents, and money to encourage young artists and designers and raise the status of the 'fine and 'applied arts and their creators. John Gloag, Pevsner, Gordon Russell, and Anton Zwemmer are some of the crusaders who have been forgotten, but their contributions to the cause are being recorded to restore their reputations.

These individuals, both men and women, dedicated their time, talents, and often financial resources to support emerging artists and designers, encouraging them to explore their chosen fields and elevate the status of the 'fine and 'applied arts and their creators. Unfortunately, many of these crusaders have been overlooked or forgotten over time, such as John Gloag, a ubiquitous presence who tirelessly championed the cause.

On the other hand, some Crusaders are remembered for other reasons, such as Pevsner, the renowned surveyor of British architectural heritage, who was once considered the guru of industrial design. Gordon Russell, celebrated for his Cotswold furniture designs, is less known for his role as a Director of the Council of Industrial Design. Meanwhile, Anton Zwemmer, the former owner of a renowned Covent Garden shop that is now a hairdresser, has largely faded from memory, despite his former status as the king bee of a beehive frequented by artists and designers seeking the latest cultural news from the Continent.

Through this project, we aim to shed light on these forgotten Crusaders and their significant contributions to the world of art and design. By recognizing their achievements, we hope to inspire future generations to appreciate the rich history and legacy of these individuals and their impact on the artistic and cultural landscape.
