Launched in 2004, the Latin American regional institution of ALBA (Alianza Bolivariana para los Pueblos de Nuestra América: Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America) aimed to address the historical legacies of neocolonial domination by prioritizing cooperation, inclusive development, and popular power. As part of a broader regional initiative to challenge the negative impacts of capitalist agriculture, ALBA placed a strong emphasis on elevating food sovereignty, which was based on safeguarding rural livelihoods, land redistribution, and sustainable agricultural production (agroecology). However, despite these regional aspirations, the implementation of ALBA's food policies faced significant challenges, and Venezuela, which served as the heart of ALBA, experienced one of the worst food crises in its history. Cultivating Socialism: The Politics of Food Sovereignty within ALBA, based on extensive fieldwork in Venezuela, provides a comprehensive examination of how peasants, workers, and states within ALBA sought to address the inequities of commercial agriculture and the limitations and contradictions encountered on the path to a regional food sovereignty regime. Rowan Lubbock's analysis of the politics of food sovereignty within ALBA offers valuable insights into how we can understand and pursue emancipatory politics in the present and future.
