  • More about Curtiss 1907-47

Glenn Hammond Curtiss founded the US aircraft industry, creating over 10,000 aircraft by the end of World War One. In 1929, the company merged to become Curtiss-Wright, but the lack of research and development invested in the company leading up to the jet age saw the premature demise of Curtiss-Wright itself. In 1947, its one attempt at breaking into the area of jet aircraft had failed, and the aviation side of Curtiss-Wright was sold to North American Aviation. This new book edition showcases the aircraft of this manufacturer from the start of operations until the end.

Glenn Hammond Curtiss, the visionary behind Curtiss, played a pivotal role in establishing the US aircraft industry as a global force. By the conclusion of World War One, the company had produced over 10,000 aircraft, showcasing its remarkable growth. Curtiss remained a director until his untimely passing in 1930, leaving a lasting legacy. In 1929, the company merged to form Curtiss-Wright, combining its expertise and resources. However, the lack of research and development investment in the years leading up to the jet age ultimately contributed to Curtiss-Wright's premature demise. While the aircraft produced by Curtiss-Wright before World War Two may not have been the best in terms of performance, their business-like approach to aircraft manufacturing allowed them to produce large numbers at reasonable prices, catering to a diverse range of customers, including foreign entities.

However, in 1947, Curtiss-Wright faced a significant setback when its attempt to enter the jet aircraft market failed. As a result, the aviation division of the company was sold to North American Aviation. This marked a turning point in Curtiss-Wright's history, and the company focused its efforts on other areas of aviation.

This new book edition of Aeroplane's Curtiss Company Profile 1907-1947 serves as a comprehensive showcase of the aircraft produced by Curtiss during its operational years. It provides a detailed account of the company's growth, innovations, and challenges, offering a valuable insight into the history of the aircraft industry. Whether you are an aviation enthusiast, historian, or business professional, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in the remarkable story of Curtiss and its contributions to the world of aviation.
