Since 2015,Office ZHU has been collaborating with the Department of Architecture of Shanghai Jiao Tong University on the project Cycling@Shanghai, conducting two rounds of research on the use of bicycles in Shanghai. The findings of this research are compiled herein. The book begins with a brief history and then systematically examines cycle infrastructure planning through comparative studies of seven bike-friendly cities worldwide (Copenhagen, Paris, Vienna, Berlin, and others). The author analyzes the cycling and metro systems, systematic planning, and infrastructure construction in these cities and, after analyzing the current cycling conditions in Shanghai, proposes specific urban planning strategies and highlights the benefits that cycling can bring to public spaces.
The book is divided into three parts. The first part provides an overview of the current cycling conditions in Shanghai, including the number of cyclists, cycling infrastructure, and challenges faced by cyclists. The second part explores the planning and design principles of cycle infrastructure, drawing from the experiences of other cities. The third part presents specific urban planning strategies for promoting cycling in Shanghai, such as building dedicated cycling lanes, improving cycling safety, and integrating cycling into urban planning.
One of the key findings of the research is that cycling can bring significant benefits to public spaces, such as reducing traffic congestion, improving air quality, and promoting physical activity. The book also highlights the importance of integrating cycling into urban planning to create a more sustainable and livable city.
Overall, the book provides valuable insights into the use of bicycles in Shanghai and offers practical strategies for promoting cycling in other cities. It is a valuable resource for policymakers, urban planners, and cyclists interested in improving cycling infrastructure and promoting sustainable transportation.
