  • More about Cyclones in Southern Africa: Volume 1: Interfacing the Catastrophic Impact of Cyclone Idai with SDGs in Zimbabwe

The world has been witnessing more intense tropical cyclones, causing devastation and loss of life. Southern Africa is one sub-region that has been particularly affected, with countries such as the Comoros, Botswana, Madagascar, Mauritius, Malawi, Mozambique, Reunion, the Seychelles, South Africa, and Zimbabwe experiencing the harsh realities of these cyclones. This book focuses on the devastating impacts of Tropical Cyclone Idai in Zimbabwe, linking its impacts with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and some of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is the first comprehensive profiling of the impacts of tropical cyclones on southern African economies, particularly that of Zimbabwe, and is part of a three-volume series. The book is suitable for professionals and disciplines such as tourism and hospitality studies, economics, sustainable development, development studies, environmental sciences, arts, geography, life sciences, politics, planning, and public health.

The world has been experiencing an increase in the intensity of tropical cyclones, resulting in devastating consequences. These cyclones bring about loss of human life, wildlife, destruction of natural resources, property, and disruption of major economic and social activities. The demand for publications focusing on tropical cyclones at regional, national, and local levels, particularly from Africa, is growing.

One sub-region that has been particularly affected by the increasing intensity of tropical cyclones in southern Africa is the Comoros, Botswana, Madagascar, Mauritius, Malawi, Mozambique, Reunion, the Seychelles, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. These countries have experienced varying degrees of damage from these cyclones throughout history.

Some of the notable tropical cyclones that have made landfall in southern Africa include Eline (2000), Favio (2007), Dineo (2017), Idai (2019), Kenneth (2019), Eliose (2021), and Chalane (2020). While all these cyclones had negative impacts, Tropical Cyclone Idai stands out as one of the most devastating, primarily affecting Mozambique, Malawi, and Zimbabwe in March 2019. The cyclone caused widespread destruction, loss of livelihoods, and environmental degradation. Thousands of people lost their lives, many more were injured, and many remain unaccounted for. As of February 2021, many people remained homeless due to the destruction caused by Idai.

This book focuses on the devastating impacts of Tropical Cyclone Idai in Zimbabwe. It explores the intersection of Idai's impacts with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and some of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The book aims to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable development and the need to address the challenges posed by tropical cyclones in vulnerable regions.

Tropical Cyclone Idai struck southern Africa with devastating consequences, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable development and disaster preparedness. The book provides a comprehensive account of the cyclone's impacts, explores the response efforts, and emphasizes the importance of building resilient communities and ecosystems to mitigate the effects of future disasters.
