Dana Island, located off the coast of Rough Cilicia in southern Turkey, holds a remarkable place in ancient maritime history. Through extensive underwater investigations and surface surveys, archaeologists have unearthed nearly 300 ancient rock-cut slipways, the largest collection of such naval installations discovered to date. While some slipways have been lost to erosion or remain undiscovered, the remaining ones provide valuable insights into the shipbuilding practices of the ancient Mediterranean.

These slipways, known as ship-sheds, were grouped within a larger shipyard area, which also included various structures used in shipbuilding, living spaces, military and religious buildings, managerial facilities, barn areas for animals, baths, and dock areas. Additionally, shops, villas, columned areas, watchtowers, and numerous other buildings were found on the island, each with its unique function yet to be fully understood.

The majority of these structures were constructed using mortarless stone, showcasing the architectural ingenuity of the ancient Mediterranean civilization. Some architectural forms bear resemblance to Iron Age masonry, adding to the intrigue of this archaeological site.

The volume "Dana Island: The Greatest Shipyard of the Ancient Mediterranean" presents and analyzes these slipways, their usage, and potential dating methods. It also discusses the water supply system, documenting the presence of cisterns. Chapters focus on the tombs discovered on the island, exploring its geology, plant usage, and the geoarchaeology of the island's structures. Extensive contextual sections provide a comprehensive review of the island's geographical situation and ancient naval history.

Furthermore, computer modeling is employed to create stunning 3D visualizations of the ancient shipyard and naval base, offering a unique perspective on this remarkable archaeological site.

Dana Island's discoveries shed light on the maritime prowess and technological advancements of the ancient Mediterranean world. Its rich history and architectural marvels continue to captivate researchers and enthusiasts alike, providing valuable insights into the ancient world's maritime trade, warfare, and cultural exchange.
