The family's return to England was followed by their departure and the author's arrival at a London boarding school. He found mental and emotional support in teachers, fellow pupils, students, tutors, friends of his parents, colleagues, or acquaintances. The title of the book alludes to the various aspects of his discontinuous and richly complex life.

“To embark on the road entailed venturing into a perilous realm where audacious and domineering vans and steadfast uncompromising lorries thundered past the confined pavement we were compelled to tread upon. Although our neighbor was a being we did not feel akin to, a short distance from our gate, it emanated the resonant echoes of artillery.

In August 1947, on the author's sixth birthday, he and his mother arrived from England in Tobruk, Libya. Waiting on the quay to meet them was a stranger, an officer in the British Army. This officer was his father, from whom he would inherit a sense of guilt and insecurity. However, in Libya, first and foremost, and then in Egypt, he would also encounter new worlds to seize and captivate his imagination. The family's return to England as the 1940s drew to a close would be followed once again by their departure, and the author's own arrival at a London boarding school. Seeking solace and emotional support, he gradually found it within the guidance of teachers, fellow pupils, students, tutors, friends of his parents, colleagues, or acquaintances. As a young graduate teaching in Nigeria, he would be exposed to novel and transformative perspectives. Subsequently, he would unravel hidden scandals within his family. The book's title alludes to the diverse facets of his discontinuous and intricately intricate life, encompassing both physical and social dimensions, psychological intricacies, and moral intricacies.”
