  • More about Dark Horse Records: The Story of George Harrison's Post-Beatles Record Label

George Harrison established his own record label, Dark Horse Records, in 1974 to release records from new artists and some of his old friends. The label had an encouraging beginning but struggled to establish itself, eventually releasing mainly Harrison's solo work. In 2020, Dhani Harrison took the reins and has made Dark Horse viable again, signing Cat Stevens and Billy Idol and releasing music from Joe Strummer and Leon Russell. In 2023, it was announced that Harrison's entire solo catalogue was going to be re-released on Dark Horse.

In 1974, as Apple was winding down, George Harrison remained steadfast in his aspiration to support emerging artists. Rather than attempting to salvage Apple, he took the bold step of establishing his own record label, Dark Horse Records. Operating on a significantly smaller scale, Harrison's vision was to release records from both new artists and some of his old friends, with the ultimate goal of releasing his own music. While Dark Horse had a promising start with a hit single from Splinter, the label faced increasing challenges, struggling to establish itself in the manner Harrison had envisioned. However, amidst these difficulties, a remarkable and diverse range of music emerged from 1974 to 1977, including some of Harrison's finest solo compositions. As Dark Horse approached the end of its initial tenure, it dropped most of its artists and focused primarily on releasing Harrisons solo work. Fortunately, in 2020, Dhani Harrison assumed the reins of Dark Horse, reviving the label's viability by signing artists such as Cat Stevens and Billy Idol, and releasing music from Joe Strummer and Leon Russell. Finally, in 2023, it was announced that Harrison's entire solo catalogue would be re-released on Dark Horse. This captivating book chronicles the label's journey from its inception to its struggles, and ultimately to its exhilarating renaissance in the new millennium.
