For the 250th anniversary of the founding of Dartmouth College, the Political Economy Project at Dartmouth brought together a distinguished group of junior and senior scholars to delve into the systemic challenges faced by those who sought to establish a new college two and a half centuries ago.

In exploring the historical context of Dartmouth's founding, the project aimed to understand the key political, economic, and religious parameters that prevailed in the Atlantic world at the time. It also sought to examine the religious landscape, particularly the unlikely meeting between Rev. Samson Occom of the Mohegan nation and Rev. Eleazar Wheelock of Connecticut during the Great Awakening of the early 1740s. This meeting led to the establishment of a new school in the northern woods in the 1760s.

The project sought to understand how contemporaries' agendas were mediated by their religious beliefs and the emerging thought world of political economy, broadly understood. It aimed to challenge the traditional commemorative volume format and provide a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of Dartmouth's history and its place in the broader world.

The resulting book, Dartmouth and the World, offers a rich and varied exploration of these topics, providing a valuable contribution to the understanding of early American education and society.
