The 13th/18th Royal Hussars (QMO) was a unique amphibious unit that played a crucial role in the D-Day invasion of Normandy. Originally a mounted regiment in India, the unit underwent a transformation into a mechanized, armored cavalry regiment. In 1940, they fought in France and faced an uncertain future after evacuating through Dunkirk. However, they were selected to spearhead the assault on Sword Beach in new, top-secret amphibious tanks. On D-Day, the Regiment successfully secured the beach and became heavily engaged in the battle for Normandy, earning themselves an excellent reputation with the infantry brigades they supported. Their casualties from D-Day onwards amounted to 142 Hussars lost, 236 wounded, with many gallantry awards received. The Regiment's story includes the personal testimonies of many of its soldiers and officers throughout the war, as well as many previously unpublished photographs.
