A poignant and heartwarming middle-grade novel in verse, "Mothman" explores the journey of a young trans boy named Noah as he grapples with the loss of his best friend, Lewis, who tragically passed away in a car accident. Lewis, an adventurous and curious soul, had a passion for sharing paranormal stories with Noah, fueling their shared dreams of encountering cryptids and exploring their genders and names.

After Lewis' death, Noah finds himself feeling lonely and yearning for someone who could truly understand him like Lewis once did. In a desperate attempt to connect with his friend, he begins writing letters to Mothman, a mythical creature that has captivated his imagination. Noah hopes that Mothman will somehow comprehend his feelings and provide him with the solace he seeks.

As Noah delves deeper into his search for Mothman, he also begins to form friendships with a group of girls in his grade, Hanna, Molly, and Alice. Although he had been acquainted with them previously, he had never been close to them. However, their welcoming nature and willingness to accept him as he is bring him a sense of belonging and comfort.

Noah opens up to each of these girls, particularly Hanna, who he develops a crush on. However, as strange occurrences start to happen and Noah becomes increasingly convinced of Mothman's existence, his parents and teachers begin to doubt his claims. Undeterred, Noah decides to embark on a risky mission to find Mothman himself, risking everything to fulfill his lifelong obsession.

Through his journey, Noah learns valuable lessons about friendship, loss, and the power of imagination. He discovers that even in the face of adversity, it is possible to find solace and connection with others, and that sometimes, the things we seek are not always what we expect. "Mothman" is a beautiful and touching story that will resonate with readers of all ages, reminding us of the importance of embracing our uniqueness and finding comfort in the unexpected.
