"Tender and indignant, satiric and apocalyptic, wildly, flamingly funny." - Weekendavisen

"With Kristian Bang Foss, the devil created the world, both nature and culture, both the desert and the local authorities. This creates devilish humor and poetry. It is hopelessly sad and it is damn funny." - Politiken

Asger's life takes a turn for the worse after a series of unfortunate events. He loses his job in advertising and is forced to leave his family home. In a desperate attempt to find some hope, he becomes the caretaker of Waldemar, a terminally ill man. Their initial days together in a Copenhagen ghetto only serve to deepen Asger's sense of despair. However, Waldemar hatches a plan to seek a miracle cure from a fabled healer named Torbi el Mekki, who is said to reside in Morocco, across two thousand miles and another continent.

Determined to fulfill his friend's last wish, Asger and Waldemar embark on a wild road trip across Europe in a beaten-up Volkswagen. Along the way, they encounter a variety of characters, including a shady taxi driver, a mysterious hitchhiker, and a pitch-black Audi that seems to be following them. The journey becomes increasingly surreal and unpredictable, as the two men struggle to navigate their way through a world that seems to be against them.

Despite the obstacles they face, Asger and Waldemar remain steadfast in their quest for salvation. They encounter a range of hilarious and tragic situations, from being stranded in a remote village to narrowly escaping a police raid. Through it all, they remain friends, relying on each other for support and humor in the face of adversity.

In the end, their journey leads them to a final confrontation with Death himself. Asger and Waldemar must face their fears and accept their fate, but they do so with a sense of humor and resilience that is both touching and inspiring.

Kristian Bang Foss's road-novel satire "The Sick Man's Tale" is a darkly comic exploration of the Danish welfare state and the human condition. Through the unlikely friendship of Asger and Waldemar, the book offers a poignant commentary on the challenges of living in a society that often prioritizes bureaucracy over compassion. With its blend of humor, tragedy, and adventure, "The Sick Man's Tale" is a testament to the power of friendship and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
